“Representation”, to represent people and events, (Collins Dictionary). I shall look at how linguistic choices affect the representation of people and events. The way a story is headlined, the words the writer chooses to use to make the representation would directly influence the reader’s perception of a particular person or event, as a reader, I know it influences me whether I realise it or not. We use the media for many different purposes; ultimately it is a way of gathering information be it for educational or entertainment purposes. To a large extent the media decide the significance of what happens in the world and the language they use to represent particular groups or describe newsworthy events usually provide ‘the dominant ways available for the rest of us to talk about those groups and events’ (Thomas 50).

Although this was merely a piece of fiction read by the actor, Orson Welles, ‘it was delivered in the format of an actual news programme and many of the audience came to accept the reality of a large number of events’. “The news format [was] a source of public information, especially at that time, [that] people had come to trust” (Eldridge, Chp 13). Now I think that the public would be a lot more discerning should a broadcast like the above was read today, it would probably have to be heard on the TV and in the papers before it might possibly be taken seriously.

When discussing Janet herself a lot of negative words are used. She is threatened, desperate, betrayed, she is in pain, the list is endless. Very few positive things to say about her how successful she has been in her singing career. It seems that we are to concentrate on the things that are less positive and our sympathies are to lay firmly with Janet. Rene on the other hand is really seen as being after her money and the fame that comes with her. We are informed of his past drug addiction, and that he didn’t want a career independent of Janet’s. Of course, this is the perception the reader gets from the discourse. He appears to want the total opposite to what she wanted, while he ‘craved the limelight’; she appeared to shy away from it.

Janet is painted as someone who is devastated about the breakdown of her marriage and we read how painful things are for her, but by the second part of the article she is already dating someone else. How sorry are we supposed to feel for her? So perhaps she is not as ‘devastated’ as she appears to be. Janet Jackson and Rene Elizondo were also very successful together, as he co-wrote 37 songs with her and directed many of her videos. Only a few lines are contributed to some of what they did together, but it is obviously not enough to outweigh all the unpleasant things that has happened to them. But it does mean that Rene Elizondo is not all bad.

How much of what is written about ‘celebrities’, is true, and how much do we as the reader want it to be. The article I will be looking at will show us how the writer has the power to make the subject being written about look good, bad or indifferent with the language they use. It has the power to make the reader decide on whether or not they like or dislike whom they are reading about, and where their sympathies may lie. I will look at how the article makes Janet Jackson look and sound. She sounds very sad, not able it seems to make wise choices, in her personal life, and that she seems to be a bad judge of character. The views of the writer are very clearly visible and you are left in no doubt where her sympathies lie and she would like you, as he reader, to feel the same way. She make i
