Corporate corruption using Marlowe's

The business world has become cutthroat, corrupt, and unethical. The globalized market is now over flooded with products and companies. Companies compete daily for customers all over the world. The CEOs of major corporations try to get every dollar they can get their hands on. They buy out smaller companies or put them out of business to take their share an their customers. They already own too much but they want more and more. The people do not care what they have to do. Corporate corruption gives the once positive human desires for wealth, ambition, and power a detrimental and negative connotation. Today's business world has become Faustian. All of the corporate scandals invoke public distrust in people. America is headed for doom if corruption is not ended.

In 1604, Christopher Marlowe wrote The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. Faustus had everything a successful man could want, but he strived for more any way he could. He made a pact with the Devil. He sold his soul and in return, the devil Mephastophlis, would be his servant for twenty-four years. So, for those twenty-four years, Faustus traveled the world gaining much knowledge and great power. When his time was up, Lucifer took Faustus to hell for an eternity of damna

This is why when people see a person who has wealth, ambition, and power, think about the negative actions that person may have done. They think that because business leaders are Faustian, they lie, and their actions may lead to the downfall of the country. There will never be a day when there will be no corruption in society, the only hope is that it will not lead to the downfall of this great nation.

The U.S. is destined for failure if the corruption is not ceased. The negative effects of some business practices has already wounded the country’s economy. Values and ethics are lost when executives do what they want for power and wealth. The almost complete loss of those principles of society may lead to the ultimate downfall of civilized culture in the U.S. and maybe the entire world. The situation that the country is in not only caused by Faustian acts but also by Machiavellian acts. In the sixteenth century philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli wrote his most famous work The Prince. The book told rulers how to rule and that a prince should put fear into his people but also be loved by them (Botha 2002). He also wrote that a prince should do whatever necessary to get what they want without worrying about who gets . He persuaded rulers to believe that they had to get what they wanted at any cost (Botha 2001). CEOs are willing to step over anyone, knock over all hurdles (or go around them), and they will not feel bad about doing it until they get caught. Doctor Faustus was the same way. He did not realize he was in trouble until the gates of hell opened in front of his eyes. He only thought about everything he would get but he did not think about what he would have to give in return. He let his great mind go to waste. That is why the scholars were so affected when he told them what he did (Marlowe 1609). Now people are starting to realize what corporations did and what they are doing for power. That is one reason why the consumers look at big time CEOs with a negative attitude. It may be too late to stop some of the corruption already going on but future cases can be and must be stopped.

In the past few years, dozens of corporate scandals came up in the media. These allegations, convictions, and admissions brought about distrust by the public. When one company does an illegal thing, it puts a dark cloud over the whole industry. To illustrate, before the Enron debacle, Enron was once the sixth largest company in the nation. Executives there tried to fool the Wall Street analysts with a complex web of partnerships and questionable accounting practices (Under Investiga
