Child Abuse

Child abuse comes in many different forms. The first one that comes to mind is physical but there are many types. There is physical, sexual, physical neglect, emotional abuse. I’m going to explain each one, their symptoms, and how they could affect children who have to endure them. Though child abuse and can recognized by the signs there isn’t always signs and that doesn’t mean that the child is being abused.

Physical abuse is defined as a non-accidental injury to a child that may include severe beatings, burns, strangulation, or human bites. Symptoms or indicators vary greatly from child to child. Possibly one or a few, or now will be readily apparent in a child that is being abused. Physical indicators could be unexplained bruises, welts, human bite marks, bald spots, unexplained burns, unexplained fractures, lacerations, abrasions, swollen area, evidence of delayed or inappropriate treatment for injuries. All could be indicators that a child is being abused but there is also behavioral indicators as well. Behavioral indicators could be self destructive, withdrawn and/or aggressive behavior, arrives at school early or stats late as if afraid to be at home, chronic runaway (adolescent), complains of soreness or moves


The affects of abuse on children can be very grim. Infants and toddlers could become clingy to anyone that will hold them, fussy, or withdrawn. It is possible that the child will have problems for the rest of its life. Pre-teens can revert back to childhood, become mature at a young age, destructive, crave attention, difficulties with school, runaways, eating disorders, school problems, or even drug or alcohol abusers. These children have already been negatively affected but they can be helped. Adolescents have some of the same out come but there are a few differences. Adolescents identify with the tough guy image, prostitution, suicidal gestures, promiscuity, and obsessively clean. All of the children need help if they are expected to live out their lives as normal adults.

Physical neglect is defined as failure to provide child with basic necessities. Physical neglect is a very common type of abuse but is the one that goes most unreported. The physical signs are abandonment, unattended medical needs, consistent lack of supervision, consistent hunger, inappropriate dress, poor hygiene, lice, distended stomach, emaciated, and inadequate nutrition. The behavioral signs are regularly displays fatigue or listlessness, falls asleep in class,
