Barbie was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler, who adapted her from a '50s German doll called “Lilli,” somehow represent illnesses in women. She named Barbie after her daughter Barbara. The 50's was a time when there were not any adult toys for children on the market with which they could act out their dreams. Original Barbie was marketed as a teenage fashion model. Her bode was always perfect, long legs and skinny waist. She resembled a ballerina, a movie star, a model, or a gold medal-winning Olympic gymnast in girl’s fantasies. She became an icon, a role model. Barbie has also been a nurse, a teacher, a stewardess and a tour guide. She became the guide for a girl’s life. She would ultimately become a representative of American culture. In learning to be female by changing Barbie’s clothing and accessories, kids could go from being a presidential candidate to a fashion model in their fantasies. Mothers as and their daughters took in Barbie’s messages about how shape and size matters. This was occurring at the very brink society’s revolution for women. The role of women in society has changed, both in the business world and leisure world. After the 1996 Summer Olympics, where the American women dominated so many sports (i.e., basketball, soccer, and softball), doors have been opened. It has paved the way for women in sports and helped to change to image of an athletic woman. The image of Barbie has changed too. And market styles also changed and today there is greater emphasis on casual and sports attire. There are not many Barbie’s sold with feet in high heel position. Barbie’s feet are now are flat to accommodate sneakers and slippers. Stores now offer dolls with many sport’s oriented accessories. This is far contract from the glamorous princess dress. I think it is because female involvement in sport has become more generally accepted than before. Since the early 60's, the Barbie-doll image and the general public’s perception has evolved. There was a time when a muscular woman was totally unacceptable. The unquestioned presumption of the absolute physical inferiority of girls and women relative to boys and men has been used as a method of restricting female participation in many sports. Several myths and ill-founded arguments proposed for limiting athletic activity are also being used with respect to occupational activity. (Carole A. Odlesby). Stereotypes that men were naturally aggressive and competitive, while women were inherently emotional, cooperative and passive have always existed. For so many years the woman’s role was based in the kitchen. Since 1960's more women have been participants in sport, with less need for apologies. The 1960's lead to a female athletic “revolution.” Women began to participate in competitions on national level, and play to win for money and for professional titles.
