Sex! Is that still taboo to talk about today in public? It is something kids are learning about from the television and movies. Should we put more restraints on whether a minor can see an R rated movie? How are we so sure that all the theatres are complying with the regulations of the Federal Communications Committee? Censorship, where do we draw the line? In the Constitution of the United States, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, religion, press, the right to assemble and to petition the government; the Ninth Amendment says, "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people". So it seems one cannot use any of the other rights to quell the rights of an individual or group. Then why is the government trying to censor literature, movies, music and art? All of the world’s modern society has become desensitized and easily trainable. Therefore society has come to accept the ideals, morals, and values driven into the psyche by the dominant forces in the nation: the Government and the Church. An NC-17 rating remains a virtual commercial death sentence for a film, but R-rated movies have just become more and more graphic as producers cut just enough material to get an R. Thus, it makes economic sense for the industry to market R-rated films to minors, with the expectation that they will either urge their parents to take them or sneak in themselves. The Federal Trade Commission also reported that underage kids could sneak into R-rated movies almost fifty percent of the time. And, of course, once the movie reaches video, it is even more accessible. R-rated movies are forbidden fruit, said Dr. James Brush, a child psychologist with a practice in Monfort Heights. “The material is interesting to young teen-agers. Not only is it forbidden fruit, it's often active, violent, sexually oriented material that they're curious about and interested in looking at. Plus, if one friend has seen it, they talk about it.
