Roswell or Bust

For the past several decades, millions of people across the world have debated whether the incident at Roswell in 1947 involved a UFO crash or was it just a simple terrestrial event blown out of proportion? Till date, there has been no substantial evidence to prove either side of the argument. In “Roswell or Bust,” the author, Bruce Handy, tries to provide evidence that supports both sides of the argument – was there really a UFO crash or was it just the hype and belief that made Roswell an internationally known city. He recounts the history of the incident, its political and military ties, and the impact it has had on our society in the form of books, movies, and television.

The author introduces the city of Roswell by providing relatively unknown facts about Roswell. He further builds interest by informing the reader that the particular topic of the article is responsible for making the city famous worldwide. In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the author finally refers to the alleged UFO crash in 1947, the incident that he believes “put the city on the national map”(1). The author also provides a hint that he is not a firm believer in the UFO crash theory by stating “on an event that, if it actually occu

Handy goes on to inform the reader of what originally occurred at Roswell on July 8th, 1947 in case the reader is unfamiliar with the incident. He also states that the main debate concerning the Roswell incident is the debris that was recovered from the site. He suggests that the reason the Roswell incident has become “a cornerstone of belief for the UFO community” (2) is because Roswell represents the only time the US military has gone on record to say that flying saucers exist.

The debate about the UFO crash in Roswell is a very plausible idea, given the publicity and media attention paid to other UFO sightings and incidents throughout history. However, without the necessary evidence, it is impossible to prove for certain the validity of a UFO crash. The author does not provide any substantial evidence to take a clear stand on the issue. Instead of evidence, he offers theories and makes references to books written by prominent UFOlogists about the incident. Later on in the article, the author informs the readers of the hardships of obtaining circumstantial evidence to support the UFO crash that is believed to have taken place in Roswell in 1947. He attributes this lack of substantial evidence to the “mutable memories of aging ‘witnesses’” (5). Although the article sheds light on many different aspects of the Roswell incident, it does not provide any information that may lead the reader to make a stand on the issue
