The Literary figure of Agrippina the younger is best remembered as being a difficult and unpleasant person to deal with, it is important to emphasise her animosity and unequalled determination stems from her portrayal in Tacitus’ annals. Her aims were quite simply to gain power and stop anyone trying to remove her power. This was quite apparent to her supporters and enemies including the stoic philosopher Seneca also a tutor to her son Nero, Burrus the prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and her other supporters included many senatorial dignitaries including Vitellius a Censor, and Pallas the financial Advisor to Claudius. Her enemies included Agrippina’s arch rival for power Messalina, Lollia Paulina, and, her other enemies had consisted mostly of females. Her enemies that had known about her hunger for power had failed when trying to stop her gaining any, and had either been assassinated, exiled, or put to death by merely gett

particularly when she married her uncle Claudius was a Censor named Vitellius who had helped in the senate to a pass a law to marry an uncle or aunt if there was no one else to marry. The Financial Advisor to Claudius Pallas had also helped in the marriage of the two since Claudius was influenced greatly by the freedmen in his court.

Agrippina’s allies that were involved in helping her achieve the power she gained,

Agrippina had used sex, violence, and her position to gain entry into political power. All of these had contributed to her downfall to gain much power and to control the empire through her son. The masterpiece of tact that Seneca and Burrus had used to publicly demote her had been the point where she lost her power which had led to her eventual downfall and her murder by the hands of one of Nero’s childhood tutor’s.
