Under the Gun
No type of gun violence has generated public alarm in recent years like shootings in schools. Over the past eight years, 206 students have lost their lives because of school-related gun violence. These recent school shootings have raised new questions about gun control:„Ï How do we keep guns away from young people? „Ï Who is to blame for these shootings? „Ï Who should be held accountable? „Ï How strict should the punishment be? Our group feels that the person committing the crime is the one who should be held accountable for the action. Sadly, in cases such as the one where a six-year-old boy brought a gun to school and shot his six-year-old female classmate, the person committing the crime is only a child. In these cases, the age of the child should be taken into consideration and the parents held accountable. In addition, we feel that there need to be changes made to the system that allows a minor to gain access to a weapon as well as to the aspects of society that glorify such violence. We feel that complete gun control needs to be enacted when dealing with the sale and possession of handguns, semi-automatic weapons, and assault weapons of any variety, and stricter
Stricter gun laws, such as Child Access Prevention (CAP) Laws which require that guns present in the home be secured either through safe storage or trigger locks, and hold the gun owner criminally responsible when a minor accesses a weapon, would also decrease the chances of children getting a hold of guns. A recent FI study of 41 school shooters in 37 incidents found that in 89% of the cases, guns were taken from the child¡¦s home. Some of those guns were even gifts from parents. Additionally, closing the gun show loophole by passing laws that require identification and background checks to be performed when guns are sold at these shows would decrease the access of minors to guns. At the present time, while federal law requires licensed gun dealers to check the backgrounds of buyers for evidence of a criminal record or mental illness, unlicensed individual dealers can sell firearms at gun shows without even asking for identification. This loophole has shown itself to be dangerous; the Columbine shooters used four guns they purchased at gun shows from unlicensed dealers. These laws would not infringe on anyone¡¦s 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. Complete Gun Control vs. Stricter Gun Laws
