Airport

A place from my childhood that I will always remember is the airport. The airport has to be one of the only places where true human emotions are portrayed. People may be depressed, sad, or stressed out while they are gone, but when they reunite with their loved ones after an absence, all that fades away with a mere smile or tear at the gate or the baggage claim of the airport. You can see people’s worries and troubles disappear once they make physical contact with the person they have been waiting for. Those pure moments of bliss make everything feel alright no matter what their previous days were like.

I cannot recall the first time I was ever in an airport; all I have is an explosion of memory flashes in my head from when I was about 4-5 years old. I do remember, however, the first family vacation I had. It was a trip to the Disney World resort in Orlando, Florida and it was also the first time I was going to meet my aunts, uncles and cousins from Argentina. We were living in Washington DC at the time and so the idea was to meet up in Dulles International and then head to Miami. What I didn’t know and what came to a shock later was that right after our vacation we were leaving the U.S. for good to live in Uruguay (South A

When we arrived in Florida I had an overwhelming feeling of surrealism; departing from a winterish atmosphere to arrive in a tropical climate, where the heat of the air was so intense that you felt suffocated as soon as you left the air conditioned airport. I kept asking myself, how is it possible to travel from one city to another in such a short time, and how come the weather is so different? I specifically recall that my Mom made me change clothes into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt as soon as we landed in Miami. What I remember after that is a night we spent in a beach hotel in Miami with our relatives from Argentina. The excitement of meeting my cousins was tremendous, and so was the feeling of uncertainty and curiosity of being in a new place. I remember walking along the beach with my cousins that night, seeing the palm trees and later trying coconut juice for the first time. I will never forget my image of that beach during nighttime; it was a secluded paradise with water warm enough to bathe in during any time of the day. The next day we headed off to Orlando in our rental cars, and arrived in the evening at a hotel located in the Disney World resort. I will never forget that night either; we were eleven people in total but the reservation was made for nine, which meant that two of us had to hide in the car while the rest went to check in. It turned out that my cousin (who was the same age as me) and I, were the ones who had to stay hiding in the car. I remember lying under the back seat of the minivan with my cousin as he began to cry in fear of
