In the first paragraphs of both works you see similarities about the laws of Nature. The Declaration states that,”…to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them...” In Locke’s Second Treaties, Of Civil Government he states that, "...what state all men are naturally in, and that is a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit within the bounds of the Law of Nature..."

Both John Locke and Thomas Jefferson

Both Thomas Jefferson and John Locke believe in the same ideas. From these comparisons you can see just how much Locke influenced the Declaration. Both men believe in the Law of Nature, they believe it to be very important in a government. One of the most important ideas is the idea of equality. In both works the wording is very similar and both suggest the same thoughts. Locke and Jefferson believe that establishing good solid laws are part of a government and both believe that laws that need to be passed should be passed. These two men and their idea have helped shape our government for what it is today.
