The breeze hits my face and blows back my hair. What now? As I walked down the street I could think only of what I would tell my parents. It would probably go something like this. I quit the A&P today Dad. “Why would you do something like that,” he asks? “Some girls came in…” “Don’t tell me you quit over some girls, Sammy,” he would interrupt. “What were you thinking?” The crease on his forehead seems to deepen as if some cataclysmic force created some rift. “It was Lengel, he scolded these girls for no good reason,” I’d reply. “They came in with their bathing suits and he told them not to flaunt around, and come decently dressed next time.” “He’s the manager, Sammy. He makes the rules. Listen son, you need to understand responsibility. You’re almost nineteen and you can’t even hold a job. What do you expect to do with your life anywa
“Sammy, Have you rung up this purchase,” Lengel said. “You are going to call Lengel right now and apologize. I can’t believe you quit over some girls.” He almost sounded as if he was talking to himself. He kept muttering about what could be going on in my head, and what did he do wrong to raise me to be this way. I suppose I could try to reason with Mom, but she would only side with Dad. “You need to do what your father says.” That and “you need to clean your room,” seems to be her motto.
