Degas was commonly known as an Impressionist. His characteristics stated in the above quote set him apart from the other Impressionists even though he took part in all but one of the eight exhibitions held between 1874 and 1886. Also the fact that he preferred to work inside his studio and he wasn’t so interested in the study of natural light as they were.
Degas was born as Hilaire Germaine Edgar Degas, after his paternal grandfather Hilaire Degas and maternal grandfather Germaine Degas. Born on July 19th 1844 he father expected him to take over the family business as he was born into a family of bankers. He did begin by studying law though soon his passion of painting took over. Growing up, his idol painter was Jean-Auguste Ingres who influenced him in the direction of classical draftsmanship. After starting his artistic studies with a pupil of Ingres, Louis Lamothes, he went on to take classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He then travelled to Italy to study the Renaissance works before returning to Paris.
