They Earn While They Learn
Clothes, accessories, parties, fast foods and fun - the trademark needs of a 'hep' and trendy college kid! But in a world where costs are high and nothing is free, where's the much needed 'moolah' to come from? Simple. Take recourse in that much derided, oft laughed at four-letter word - WORK. Not just during the summers and vacations, but all through the year, in a regular job that leaves enough time for an education. After all, as the old saying goes, hard work hasn't killed anyone, yet. Besides, whether we like it or not, most academic courses these days are designed to occupy one for about four hours a day, leaving enough time to rake in some dough. Unless one happens to be a Science student. Chetan Wadekar, an ex-student of Sathaye College who had to eventually give up his job, because his work timings clashed with that of his practicals and lectures, says, "It is easier for students of Arts and Commerce faculties to work along with their studies. Science subjects are more demanding and take up more time." But then, where there's a will, there's got to be a way. Right? Manjari Sharma, a student of Sir Vithaldas Thackersey's College of Home Science who is majoring in photography and freelances as a photographer agrees.
"When you have put in hours of work to earn the cash," says Sumitra, "you tend to think ten times before blowing it up." Add to this, the concern of some employers who look upon their young employees as their wards. For instance, at Mad Hatters the salaries are paid by cheque and make their way straight into the bank, in the hope that this will encourage the students to save. "She also points out that unlike her non-working friends who are subject to their parents' whims and restrictions, "earning my keep means that I get to spend the money without too much fuss." Ironically, with more money in their pockets, collegians tend to spend less of it. Work and studies take up much of the time that they would normally use to 'hang out', party or go shopping. Besides, the young employees quickly learn the value of money. Even at the entry level, the emphasis is on training where a motivated crew-member with training, can race up the ladder to become a restaurant manager." What do potential employers look for? According to Darren Rodricks, the restaurant manager at the McDonald's outlet at CST, "We look for people who are enthusiastic and people friendly.
