The Spirituality of Native American Dance
The art of dance can be dated to 9,000 years ago. There are many different types of dances recorded in history books. The most spiritual of them all come from the Native Americans. Native Americans have many different dances they do for health, well being, invocating the spirits, and for success. Let me begin with the spirituality of the Native American’s as a whole. The Native American people knew the land was not theirs to own. They never tried to make it their own, as people today do. The Native American people took nothing for granite, and they worked with and used everything they had. To them all acts of nature were different gods, and they were one with nature themselves. For example, if a non-Indian ask how to say something in Lakota, the Native American language, such as tree, a Native American elder would have to know what kind of tree and a description of it (Arts 2). Knowing what every tree looks like and being able to describe each one is very spiritual. As one can see, if this is how Native Americans were with nature, then the blessing of their gods had to be very spiritual. This is why there were dances like the Sun Dance. The Kiowa tribe, a southern plains tribe, between mid June and late July, p
Powwows are still conducted today. Many different people go to experience the Native Americans and how they still practice what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. I have not experienced one myself, but I believe it would be an amazing thing. The spirituality of the Native Americans has gone through a lot, but through all it is still there. No matter if you are full blooded or just half you still can feel it in your blood. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to experience this. It is amazing to know that a few remaining tribes today still live their lives as if nothing has changed. They still practice as if they were before America even came to be. It is sad though, that they are forced onto reservations, and not allowed to be nomadic as their ancestors were. In addition, today there is a big fuss about immigration. The Native Americans are the only true people of this country. Spiritual and beautiful are the only two words that can describe the Native American ways. It is not known by many because they overlook it. The art of their dance should be appreciated for what it means not just as a show. It needs to be understood by those that view it in nothing but pleasure. Spiritual and sensual is that of the Native American tribal dances. reformed the Sun Dance. Because the Sun was the father of the buffalo and the Kiowa’s, to them, this was the most sacred dance of all. Other tribes would come attend this dance. The Sun Dance is one of the first recorded intertribal dances in all the southern Plains (Kracht 4). To me, the spirituality of the Native American dance is so amazing. It is something that cannot be duplicated in
