In “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”, Gawain accepts the foolish task of the Green Knight in order to save King Arthur’s life and honor. The Green Knights task is irrational; therefore none of the other knights are willing to take on such a mission. However, since Gawain is equipped with such a strong loyalty, he takes on this task so Arthur would not have to complete it. He humbly states, “Since this affair that’s befallen us here is so foolish, And since I have asked for it first, let it fall to me” (214). The fact that Gawain is the only knight who will complete the task says something about the difference of loyalty between Gawain and the other knights. All of the other knights are loyal to Arthur, however not loyal enough as to give themselves up to protect their liege.
