Edgar Allen Poe was one of the great American authors ever; his work was ground breaking and that is why he is still famous today. Poe sets the standard for horror writing because of his creative style and crazy ideas (Wilson, James). Poe was definitely born with a natural talent for writing horror, but there were many other factors that affected his writing. One very important thing that had a big impact on Poe’s ability to write such gloomy and scary stories and poems was his own life experiences; his life gave him more inspiration for his work in literature. The rest of Poe’s life was also hard. The pattern for Poe's career was success as an artist and editor but failure to satisfy his employers and to secure a livelihood (Regan, Robert). He was stuck in poverty, and he never really settled down because he had to move around to find work. The middle part of his life was when he produced most of his work. In the later part of his life he again experienced death, this time it was his wife, Virgina, died in 1847 (Regan, Robert). After that he lived the remaining part of his life alone and unhappy and he died this way. During the time after his wife died he did produce some good work. Some of it, such as “The Raven”, was very dark, as you would expect from a man in his situation. Still despite all the hardship in his life Poe’s work was viewed as excellent by nearly everyone.
