It is safe to assume that language changed our understanding of the world. Since the beginning we formed societies in which ideas were shared, questions were answered and messages were passed on to coming generations of men, through graphical images either on the rocks or papyrus. Can we attempt to imagine a society without language? Without a way to interact individuals will not have the power to form societies, bond, reproduce, or function together. A thought or idea, when imagined by us, can only be elaborated on, if it is rehearsed and balanced in words. It follows then that a thought cannot exist without a word, a word is the backbone for the flow of thought. Thus, language lies at the very core of our beings, it is the foundation, the essential constituent of our existence and evolution.

Orwell’s novel portrays a picture of a totalitarian system gone to the absolute extreme, but it is a novel that is primarily about psychological control of the public. The Party does employ torture as part of its control regimen, but the psychological control tactics are the dominant ones in the novel. While physical punishment is difficult to administer, psychological tactics (manipulation of people through language) can be continuously applied to the general public without raising great public opposition or fear, and that is where its strength is. It is for this reason that Newspeak rather than torture is planned as the way to erase thought crime. However, while Newspeak is a very significant method of mind control through language, it is just a part of a greater Inner Party scheme. It is, in fact, the Party-controlled media in the novel that expertly uses Newspeak as well as other tricks to spread its propaganda and brainwash the public.

The rehabilitating technique used on Alex is responsive conditioning with the use of drugs and visual aids. Conditioning is either teaching or forcing one to feel or think a certain way when given a decision. Alex is therefore forced to feel and think negative responses when shown evil sites or thoughts. Yet the an error had occurred when the state was conditioning ‘good’ into him. The use of classical music along with the treatment conditioned Alex to respond to that as well.

In Nineteen Eighty–Four Orwell clearly outlines the goal of language “advancement”. The goal of the Party is to dominate every single person’s consciousness and make them into slaves that will strive to accomplish whatever the party needs. The best way to do that would be to make the party look discrete, flawless, without any sort of negative thought or emotion attached to it. The best way of achieving that would be to alter the thinking of people and since people of that time are living in the modern world and literature as well as audio/visual media are already available to the public, the party bases their advances on media. People generally strive to expand their lexicon, the government in Nineteen Eighty-Four actually aims to cut back the Newspeak vocabulary. One of the Newspeak engineers says, “[we’re] cutting the language down to the bone . . . Newspeak is the only language in the world whose vocabulary gets smaller every year”.
