Stradlater vs. Tom
The two novels, The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye, have two characters who are very similar but at the same time, different from each other. Tom Buchanan can be considered one of the antagonists in The Great Gatsby, and can be compared to the character of Stradlater from The Catcher in the Rye. Tom is sort of a grown-up Stradlater and by knowing each one of them, we can learn a lot. Even though he always looks so clean, Stradlater is actually very disgusting in the inside and with his personal habits. He is known as a “secret slob” because of his nasty personal habits: (17; ch. 1). Stradlater, from the Catcher in the Rye, and Tom Buchanan, one of the antagonists in The Great Gatsby, have a lot in common, and their personality makes The Great Gatsby’s theme extremely obvious. Tom is sort of a grown-up Stradlater, and both of them are only interested in their futile world. Their frivolous and egocentric surroundings are only made up of their fantasies and desires to always be the best of all the people surrounding them.
