What would the world be like if people did not have faults? It would be a very boring place because everyone would be the same, perfect people and would never be able to explore in life for fear of messing up. The Three-penny Opera was a great play, which was shown here at McDaniel College, it was produced and directed so that college kids and others could clearly under that people are not perfect. The Three-penny Opera uses the literary elements of dilemma, stage property, suspense, tones, and foil to show that everyone has their faults.

Throughout the play, characters face different dilemmas that show faults in society. The two main dilemmas are between Mack the Knife and the Peachums, and also between Mack the Knife and the police. The reason for the dilemma between the Peachums and Mack the Knife is that the Peachums’ daughter Polly married Mack the Knife, a notorious criminal, without their consent. The Peachums try to get Mack the Knife and Polly a divorce so that they can get Jack’s money. Later, they change their plan to get him arrested so they can collect the thirty-pound reward. As well as dilemma, stage properties, and suspense, tone also shows how society has faults. Various tones were used in the play. Tone is the expression of a literary speaker’s attitude to the listener. The audience really understood how upset, happy, and angry the actors were by their tones. By using the appropriate tones, actors were able to get across certain messages. An example of the usage of tone is when Polly and her parents are arguing about the marriage to Mack the Knife. This shows that when society does not get their way it will start to argue, instead of talking things out. Polly spoke in an upset tone of voice while her parents were using an angry tone or voice. Another example of how the actors use their tone of voice to show how society had faults is when Polly took the drink out of her mom’s hand and she start chasing her and yelling at for a drink because she was upset. This scene shows how society turns to alcohol when it finds out bad news. The actors effectively used the tones to convey their messages.

Through the use of dramatic elements such as dilemma, stage property, suspense, tones, and foil, The Three-Penny Opera shows that people have many faults that they can try to fix. Furthermore, the actors used these dramatic elements perfectly to convey their message about how society has many faults. Fortunately, the play revealed the imperfections of society in great dramatic fashion.

In addition to dilemma, another literary element that was used was stage property. The stage props were very good for a college play compared to a Broadway production. Stage properties make the play more interesting. The use of one main backdrop was wonderful. The play used one setting for the jail, the beggars’ shop, the warehouse, and the whorehouse. One of the stage props, the scrolls with writing on them which narrated the story, helped the audience follow the play. The setting of jail scenes were very good; the jail cell they used was very well thought out and looked realistic. The best prop by far was the Power Wheels that the Queen’s messenger drove.
