America offered to all who desired it, a horizon glowing with opportunity and prosperity. It was a vast, new land filled with great chances. Not all were able to succeed as easily as others, but along with risks there is bound to disappointment for some. But one cannot dwell on the failures when regarding a country that flourished despite them.
A broad range of motives pushed those immigrating to America. Younger, aristocratic sons were forced by primogeniture to hunt for their own fortunes. Some were drawn by the allure of an adventure, others by the allure of toleration. And then there were those lower classes just looking to better their own lot in life. England was over crowded with unemployed and homeless. Rich men had no reason to move from where they were. To the poor men and women who began to migrate to America, any improve
America can truly be considered a land of many opportunities. There existed a wide variety of way for a man to build his life. Men used their environment to survive, through agriculture or industry. The poor man could now attain wealth, status in a newly forming American aristocracy, and the comfort of success. For some it was easier for others, but in one man’s failure can be another’s good fortune. Every indentured servant and slave had a master who gained from his or her toil. America was anything but a nation lacking in economic opportunity. How could it be when it did so well?
