The Dedication and Political Activism of Golda Meir
Few women have had the opportunity to affect real change in the world in which they live. Golda Meir not only took that opportunity, but she helped to change the world for Jewish people forever. Golda Meir spent her life working towards the betterment of Jewish life through her dedication to the foundation of a Jewish homeland.Golda Mabovitch was born in Kiev, Russia in 1896. Her Jewish family went through so many years of torment that they decided to immigrate to America. “I suppose my recollection of being frightened is the clearest of all my memories” (Meir, My Life 13). The Mabovitch family arrived in America in the spring of 1906, and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Morris 7-8). The family ran a small grocery store and Golda was able to attend elementary school. Golda excelled in school and wished to become a teacher (Morris 14). In 1913, Golda moved to Denver, Colorado to attend high school, a luxury her parents were not willing to provide her at the time. Life on at the Merhavia Kibbutz took its toll on Morris Myerson. He longed to start a family with Golda and also to have time with his wife. Golda and Morris eventually left the kibbutz for Jerusalem in order to have children and save their marriage (Noble 36). Between the years 1936 and 1939, the British, which had control of Palestine, did not act favorably towards the idea of introducing new immigrants to the area. The British at this time were, however, very friendly towards the Jewish settlers in Palestine. The Arabs of the region were on friendly terms with Hitler’s Germany. The High Commander of Great Britain had enormous Jewish sympathies; the Arabs had rebelled against the British in efforts to get the British to leave the region (Noble 48). Golda Myerson went back to Israel in 1949 to accept a new title. David Ben-Gurion selected Golda to be Minister of Labor. “It was now her job to find work and housing for new immigrants” (Noble 127).
