Holiness through the Eyes of Other

“But just as he who called you is Holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be Holy because I am Holy.’” 1 Peter 1:15-16

What is holiness? Is it possible to live a life that is holy? How do I view holiness in my life? These are the questions that I hope to answer from Drury’s point of view and mine.

In the book, Holiness for Ordinary People. Drury views holiness as loving God with all ones heart, mind, soul and strength, and loving ones neighbor as oneself. Simply stated as, holiness is being like Christ. The definition of holiness is Christ himself, for He loved his Father and His neighbor perfectly; also He was able to obey perfectly. The terms obedience and love goes hand in hand. Therefore, the definition of holiness can be summed up into perfect love (13).

The idea of holiness begins with Christ. His holiness is so vital to his nature that in Amos 4:2a, it states, “The Sovereign Lord has sworn by his holiness.” Above all things, God is holy. To be holy is to be like God because He is the Holy One (27).

Written throughout the Bible, there are promises of forgiveness for sins and freedom from the power of sin. God’s word stresses the importance of cleansing from all impurity, rene

This illustration is similar to our relationship with God. In Genesis 1:26a, we read, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness’” As our lives begin to develop more and more with Christ, He commands us in 1 Peter 1: 15-16, “To be holy because I am holy.”

I view holiness in my life as obeying God’s command. I’m not obeying His command because I fear Him but because I love Him. The true love that states, “Lord, I love you. I will do whatever you say to please you. Not because I know in the end I have a reward; but because I want to.” The true love in my holiness comes from making a decision that I want to live up to God’s standard. I want Him to reveal the areas of my life that are black so I can make them pure before Him. Holiness to me has everything to do with obeying, loving God and loving others.

He commands us to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” This one particular command puts a totally different twist on the definition of holiness. Drury defines holiness as having two parts, love God and love your neighbors. The section of ‘loving God’ is easy. Why is it? It’s easy because He first loved Us. As human, its very typical and easy for us to love people who love us. It’s very easy for us to reach out a helping hand to those who would the same. It’s very easy to feed a person who you know in return will do the same. So in reality, it’s very easy as humans to define holiness as loving God with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our minds and strength. For we know that He is devoted to doing the same. Could that possibly be the reason why many people defines holiness as just loving God. Is that what we have been taught?

For instance, when a sinner first becomes saved and enters their first step into sanctification, they honestly believe at the moment that they truly love God. They believe they have surrendered everything in their lives that would hinder the love. And they embraced the thought full heartedly. Are they wrong for thinking that way? Are they wrong for saying such phrases? The answer is no because God commands us to love Him with our entire being.

I honestly believe that a Christians can not speak of themselves as being holy and not obey God’s command. Obeying and obedience is vital and essential in the step of holiness. A Christian can not say, “Yes, Lord, I love you” and shrug a shoulder to a homeless person. They can not say, “Yes Lord, I love you” and walk across the street deliberately because they see a homosexual person coming down their path. They can not say, “Yes Lord, I love you” and falsely accuse a brother or sister of wrong doing. They can not say, “Yes Lord, I love you” and not help a brother or sister out of wrong doing. It’s just not possible. There’s no true love in the relationship.
