On September 4th, the first day of the new school year, the people of Alexandria were awaiting the arrival of the black students who were being bused in from other schools. The new minority students were met with protesters, hostility and racial slurs (I.e. monkey, coon). There were a lot of things that were changing in the city of Alexandria and a lot of the townspeople did not like it.

First, this town was segregated in all aspects of daily living. Blacks went to different schools, ate at different eating establishments and lived in different areas. It was stated that earlier in the movie a white storeowner killed a young black teen

Judging from the movie, I think the main purpose in producing the movie was to show the struggles that everyone was facing during changes occurring after the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement. The movie touched upon segregation, racism, integration, employment and housing. It seems that these were things that the Civil Rights Movement was there to correct. It was showing how people overcame segregation in the early 1970’s and how Coach Yoast states “the Titans taught the city how to trust the soul of the man rather than the look of him” it showed how two significant people could overcome their differences for the importance of a cause. Coach Boone wanted to make a difference in his players’ lives and was soon applauded by the blacks and the whites through the winning football season. He taught them the game of football as well as how to live together in the game of life. The techniques used to achieve this purpose was a headliner, Emmy award winning actor, Denzel Washington to play the part of Coach Boone. Will Patton, Coach Yoast, was also great as the supporting actor. Young, energetic and enthusiastic actors who were the football players, also infused the film with a lightheartedness that really grips the audience. Films that deal with such mature ideas as racism occasionally become entangled in depression, but the main characters of the film, being teenagers, are able to keep things from getting too serious with their fun-loving attitudes.

Second, racism (the belief that some races are by nature superior to others) by the dominant culture was evident. It seemed that all the white members of the team were racist at the beginning of the movie, only knowing the ways in which they were taught by their parents to respond towards minor
