Transcendentalism and Anti-Transcendentalism Compared
During the New England Renaissance, Transcendentalism and Anti-Transcendentalism were the two main ways of writing literature. Transcendentalism was based on humanity and nature. The believed that humans shared a universe made of God, nature, and humanity. Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson were Transcendentalist poets. Anti-Transcendentalism was a more “depressing, if you will, literature that spoke of the limitations and destructiveness of the human race. One of the most well-known writers of Anti-Transcendentalism was Nathaniel Hawthorne. Besides being completely opposite, Emily Dickinson managed to incorporate both styles in her wrting. One Transcendentalist was Henry David Thoreau. One piece that he wrote that was very good was “Walden.” In "Walden," Thoreau tries to think of what it would be like to get away from it all and live by himself in the woods. Anti-Transcendentalism does not get any more opposite from what was done by Emerson and Thoreau. Anti-Transcendentalism I think Emily Dickinson is a very different kind of writer.
