Now at 18 years old, an ambulance driver in Italy, he was constantly surrounded by gunfire during the war, as he made desperate attempts to rescue people. Hemingway was indeed a brave person, with a thirst for action and a propensity to help people. This is not to say that he was indifferent to the things he had seen as an ambulance driver, what he saw he found to be unquestionably shocking. He simply wanted to do more. He signed up for canteen duty instead. It was now his job to distribute food to the army.
