Firstly, the person’s genes affect the likelihood of becoming an alcoholic. There are some specific genes that scientists have identified that protect against heavy drinking. These genes make it unpleasant to have a lot of alcohol in your system. It makes you get nauseous easier and makes you feel uneasy. Asians are particularly prevalent with these genes. Native Americans, who are known for heavy alcoholism, do not have these genes (Genetic Influences on Alcohol Drinking and Alcoholism).

Being the spawn of an alcoholic, children of alcoholics (COAs) have a much higher chance of becoming an alcoholic. According to Judith Sexias and Geraldine Youcha in their book, Drugs, Alcohol, and Your Children

Genetics is not the only reason that COAs are so much more likely to develop alcoholism. Having alcoholic parents can also influence you to become an alcoholic later in life. Not only that, but alcoholism has been proven to be connected with many other family problems. Gilda Berger said it very well in her book entitled, Alcoholism and the Family, “About two out of every five parents who abuse their children are alcoholics.” Also economic hardship has been connected with alcoholism (Berger 11-14). Adult daughters of alcoholic mothers expressed they did not receive enough emotional support from their mothers (Ackerman, p32).

Another way of dealing with alcoholism is through support groups. They offer a group of people that all share the same problem and can relate to on another. As Judith Sexias states in her book, Children of Alcoholism, “When you recognize that you are not alone and that the burden of your childhood can be lightened, you may feel relieved” (172). This is exactly the point of support groups.

There is also a downside to this solution, however. With all these family members letting out their emotions all at once, things can get a little heated. Some people tend to get easily offended when they are at such a vulnerable state. Arguments tend to break out and feelings start to get hurt. This is the only reoccurring problem with family invention. Sometimes things just get out of hand.
