David berkowitz

A dark dismal day in the New York State Supreme Court, I walk in with shackles banging around with a big orange jumpsuit blinding the crowd. Two-deputy sheriff’s escorting me with a dead silent audience in the background. I sit down in a chair that so many people have sat before in front of people that can take away my life or spare it. A cold crisp breeze rolls though the room feeling like all the sprits of the dead and tortured men and women that suffered at the hands of me. The tall dark walls can not contain the evil that lives inside my soul and body. A tall man walks from behind the walls wearing a long black gown and taking his time to take his seat above the growing crowd. The two big wooden doors slam and the group of people draw to a pin drop silence. This court case would go into history and I would go down as one of the most famous serial killers of all time.

On the right side of the room I sit hands folded on my lap with a straight face every once in a while cracking an evil smirk. Think curly brown sideburns run along my pale white face. A pair of dark framed glasses sits on a long outstretched nose that so many have made fun of before. Looking on the past what has made me do these unexpl

BANG! I hear a loud thud of a judge’s gavel and wake up from a trip back in time reliving the events that lead up to what just happened. The judge had just sentenced me to a term in prison that I could never live though. I was sentenced to three hundred and sixty five consecutive years behind prison walls. This term was best for society and me. My childhood the point in my life where I could have turned out like every other kid on my block and contribute to my community just like they were. It relieved most of America knowing someone like me would not run around the street causing anymore chaos and havoc. A man comes to escort me to my future home of Attica prison in the state of New York. I stand up knowing that my freedom is gone. Looking down again at my sliver shackles and orange jumpsuit knowing whatever I said could not help the pain and anguish the families right at that moment. I David Berkowitz walked into a life of solitary confinement where I would spend the rest of my adult life. So learn from my mistake value and cherish your family it can make a world of difference.

In this quote out of a letter he wrote during this time. “It’s cold and gloomy here in New York, but that’s okay because the weather fits my mood…gloomy.” (McIntyre 4) Shortly before the killings, David turned to arson as a way to vent his anger. His diary indicates he set over 1400 fires in New York during 1975. (Terry 89) David also attempted two knife attacks against women during this period, both survived. David indicated that his feelings at the time were of “demons, harassing him though the continual barking of his neighbors’ dogs ordering him to initiate these dastardly deeds.” (Berkowitz 11)

David, born on June 1, 1953. His parents, Nat and Pearl Berkowitz, adopted David at birth since they could not have children of their own.
