Waking in the Night

Waking in the Night

Picture this. It’s 7:30 pm, your just finishing up on dinner, the baby is fed and surprisingly, still up playing happily in his swing. The daycare told you that the baby took a little nap between 12:00 pm to 2:00pm and has been up the rest of the time. You’re smiling in your head, knowing that the baby is going to sleep good tonight. At around 8:30, you give the baby a nice warm bath. The baby is smiling and slowly nodding off into the bath water. After his bath you give him a nice gentle massage and get him dressed, only to find him sound asleep. “Not yet” you whisper in the baby’s ear. “We have to feed you a bottle, so you won’t wake up hungry.” You warm his bottle up and feed him. The baby wakes up slowly to the familiar taste of the formula. The baby eats four ounces and falls asleep for the night, but little do you know that your night is just beginning.

It’s 10:00pm and you decide to get some sleep. You set the alarm clock to 5am, just in case your baby does not wake you up. 12am rolls around and you hear a familiar cry. You fumble out of bed and make the baby’s bottle. You feed him until he falls asleep. You put the baby b

The next method is the ferber method. The ferber method was invented by Dr. Richard Ferber. Dr. Ferber is the director of the center for Pediatric Sleep Disorder at Children’s Hospital in Boston, Mass. Since writing his book, Solve your Child’s Sleep Problems, he became known as a leading and controversial pediatric sleep expert. Ferber believes in a progressive approach to helping your child fall asleep and stay asleep. Briefly, he suggest that after a warm, loving pre-bedtime routine such as singing, rocking, or reading a book, put the baby to bed while still awake. Putting him to bed wake, says Ferber, is crucial to successfully teaching babies to go to sleep on their own. Once you put the baby in the bed, leave the room. If he cries, wait a certain amount of time before checking on him. When the parent does go back into the room, soothe him with your voice when picking him up. Gradually increase the amount of time that passes between checks. After about three or four days, the infant will learn that crying earns nothing more than a brief checkup from the parent. He will learn to fall asleep on his own, with out the parent’s help. Before the parent starts the ferber method, make sure that the feeding habits, pain, stress, or medication, are not causing or contributing to the baby’s sleep problems.

I wrote my problem essay on the subject because I have had this problem for nearly three months. My baby waking up in the middle of the night has caused me many frustrating and tearful nights. My husband tries to help out but he isn’t at his best in the middle of the night, so he forgets little things that need to be done to try to comfort the baby. Listening to my son cry for several hours at a time even while I am holding, rocking, or si
