Abigail Williams was a teenage girl living in Salem during the late 17th century. She was an orphan after her parents were murdered right beside her while they were asleep. She survived this crisis but instead of using it to learn from, she chooses to use it to hurt people. Since her parents have dies she has been living with her uncle, the Reverend Parris. It is here where she gets caught up in conjuring spirits and where her bitterness truly begins to show. She uses her experiences to threaten the other girls if the tell the adults about her drinking blood. When talking to her past love r John Proctor she confesses that she still loves him and that the

girls illness had nothing to do with witchcraft. It is after this conversation that her true test happens. When Rev. Hale arrives he begins interrogating Abigail and she claims that, “[Tituba] made me do it! She made Betty do it!…She made me drink blood!”(1195). This shifts the blame off herself and onto Tituba. Not only does Abigail shift the blame of herself but then she proceeds to lie and claim she did see the devil starts naming innocent peoples names. This shows that she has failed this test of honesty. Later on in the play Mary Warren, one of Abigail’s friends, confesses that she never saw any spirits and the other girls are just lying. In hearing this Abigail chooses not to confess but to instead chose to accuse Mary of sending out her shadow upon the courtroom, sending a yellow bird in the courtroom, and the girls even go as far as to mock every word Mary says. Abigail continues on with her selfish ways when she lies repeatedly and continually causes people to meet their death. She cares about nothing but herself and what she wants, which is John, and when her plain back fires and he is accused of witchcraft Abigail flees and decides to never return. She did not pass any test that life threw against her instead of facing them she took the cowards way out by lying and running away.

In the play The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, Different test are put in front of Abigail Williams, Rev. Hale, and John Proctor. These test everything from their honesty, to their prudence, and even as far as acceptance of own past sins. Many of these test we experience ourselves in every day life. Much like the characters in this play these test may either make us or break us.

Unlike Abigail, Rev. Hale takes what life gives him and tries to be very open minded in situations. Rev. Hale knew about the many signs that the devil put on those he had possessed and was not the type of man that jumped to conclusions. Once Rev. Hale entered the town of Salem he let the search for witchery get to far ahead of himself and starts to run to every person that Abigai
