Survival Methods in a Siberian Camp

The primary theme in the novel One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn is the fight for survival. Survival is a fight every human must take part in, although ones fight is much easier than another’s. The prisoners fight for survival is tough in the Siberian Camp, especially under the severe conditions such as the cold and the brutality of the guards and camp life. While the prisoners’ methods to survive vary, many of them still get through camp. It is difficult to stay humane in the brutal camps, but it is not impossible. Such is the case of a diligent prisoner named Shukhov. Maintaining his humanity, Shukhov depends on himself to survive camp while others rely on various things to pull them through.

Shukhov survives the prison camp by observing various acts of humanity and in doing so stays civil. For example, early in the book, the reader learns that Shukhov often gets up early in the morning so that he may have a little time to himself and may even “go the rounds of the warehouses, offer

Each prisoner depends on different things to get them through camp, whether it is moral or immoral. For instance, there are many prisoners like Fetiukov who rely on others hard work to bear ones own hardships that the camp puts one through. On the other hand, there is Alyosha who takes the support of the bible. “In freedom your last grain of faith will be choked with weeds. You should rejoice that you’re in prison. Here you have time to think about your soul” (Solzhenitsyn 155). Alyosha does not dwell on the fact that he is in prison, but makes the most of his sentence. Moreover, there are groups of prisoners (squads), who look up to their squad leaders to get them through everyday work. Such as the squad leader of the 104th, Tiurin. “To the squad Tiurin was a father” (Solzhenitsyn 99), and vice versa. Tiurin takes care of the squad like a father would of his son. He depends on the squad to give him the support to live and carry on his duties. Other prisoners may even depend on a cold bowl of oatmeal to keep them
