Technology in the home is a different example, however. Marketing researchers have become very skilled at collecting extremely detailed data about consumers. Say a consumer purchases an item from a supermarket; the supermarket automatically records the items you buy. Marketing researchers also have access to this information, which may allow them to call that person at their home and solicit further products in relation to the item they just bought at the store. This is an obvious display of intrusion on one’s personal privacy. Not only is this a form of harassment but the consumer was not informed nor gave their permission for a third party to have access to their personal information. This is where the line must be drawn. Technology is equating one’s public life and one’s personal life on the same level. “…what was previously invisible and meaningless is made tangible and significant.�
