Character Analysis of Estella from Great Expectations
Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, is a book filled with ups and downs, twists and turns and is all linked together by the main character, Pip. Great Expectations is about how a young boy named Pip wants to become a gentleman and gets the chance to do it. As a boy, he lived with his sister and her husband who worked as a blacksmith. He lives with them because Pip’s parents dies when he was very young. A couple days after the book begins, Ms. Havisham invites Pip to “play” at her estate with Estella, her niece whom she has trained to reject all men. Pip believes Estella is extremely beautiful, but she rejects him and calls Pip a “common boy.” This is one of the reasons Pip accepts his Great Expectations. Later in the book a man who calls himself Jaggers approaches Pip. Jaggers says Pip has received Great Expectations and is to go to London at once to become a gentleman. He goes to London learning everything he needed to know without knowing how this fortune had been brought upon him. As the book progresses Pip encounters many obstacles and goes through several experiences that changed his life forever. The person who arranged for all of this is completely unknown to Pip for most of the book although he does have an i
All three aspects of the character Estella are all important in the building of Pip’s character. The three aspects will be ranked on a scale of 1-10 with a rank of 10 meaning that it affected Pip’s character the most. With a ranking of 10 is Estella’s relationship to Pip. If Pip ever knew Estella, then she would not have been there to criticize him and make him want to become a gentleman. Next with a rank of 7 comes Estella’s importance to the plot. Without Estella, Magwitch would not have been reminded of anyone and may not have give Pip his Great Expectations. Lastly, with a rank of 5 comes Estella’s representation of a theme. Since this aspect of Estella is bridged from the other two, it isn’t as important as the other two. She helped develop Pip’s character in this aspect because she showed him what true friendship is and vice versa. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens shows Dickens’ true writing ability and his potential to create and develop compelling characters. “Even in the character of the protagonist there are marked differences from that of his creator: combined with his demonstrated tenderness there was in Dickens a hard, almost ruthless streak which is omitted entirely from the character of his consistently gentle hero.” (The Clarendon Dickens, edited by Kathleen Tillotson et al. (5 volumes published, Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1966- ). Estella and Pip had a relationship that experienced many odd twists and turns. Estella started out not liking Pip, but as the book progressed, she began to like him more and more. They met each other because Ms. Havisham invited Pip to come “play” at her estate. When Pip first came, she disliked him and called him a “common boy” because Ms. Havisham told her to reject all men. Throughout the book, Estella hints to
