Every college term, there is at least one story about a group of students who risk alcohol poisoning for rituals such as “21 for 21”, a shot of liquor for every birthday that they’ve ever had, or students who drink too much at a “pre-game party” and are killed when they stumble over the ledge of a balcony. Nearly all of these stories are put into local and sometimes even national newspapers to shock the American public. We know underage drinking is a serious problem in the United States, but what can we do to fix it? Researchers have put together several different conflicting approaches to solving teenage rebellion against the law.

The problem isn’t restricting the age of drinkers, but restricting the abuse of the alcohol by drinkers. In other countries, the minimum drinking age limit is set significantly lower than that of the United States. People are introduced to alcohol as a social activity, not a beverage to get plastered on. Most young adults in the US view alcohol as a drug whose main purpose is to get someone drunk. Because of that, they end up using the “drug” with intentions of getting themselves drunk.

All things considered, it would be more beneficial to the public to lower the drinking age to at least 18 when people in the United States are legally referred to as adults. By setting a high minimum drinking age, too big of a gap is left between the legal adult and the legal drinking adult. It prompts people to break the law with underage drinking, which could lead to other crimes that may not be as minor.
