Big Fish

The movie Big Fish, basically, is a simple story about a father’s relationship with his son. But what makes the movie so unusual and what some viewers find confusing is the method that the director, Tim Burton’s creativity of storytelling by using a fractured timeline sequence. All together, Big Fish has terrific cinematography that it shows off the beautiful set decoration by long-zoom-out and beautiful intertwined cuts. The settings in the movie always have an atmosphere, achieved by the cinematography or by special production values. Moreover, their costumes are well made and the special effects.

In the beginning of the movie, the director starts the movie with young Edward standing in the middle of the lake with an unexpected giant fish swimming around him. It definitely caught viewers’ interest and attention right away because of its unforeseen fish. Then the title Big Fish is shown after this scene.

One of the movie’s most unforgettable adventures is in the heavenly town of Spectre, where water tastes sweet, grass are so green and shoes are collected on a high wire. Bared foot citizens here even present more of the heavenly feeling. It is an ideal town with bright green grass where the streets and sid

ewalks would normally be. For the circus scenes, the performers and the equipment had to be so authentic and they had to look like they came out of American circus.

The color of green and white are the primary color here. As a result, Big Fish bursts with life and a genuine sense of wonder. It proves without question the most life affirming, feel-good work in Burton’s gloomy oeuvre. Furthermore, the color of white has remained as the transaction of time to time. From every scene to scene, it constantly ends up with a white building or white wall, which creates a unity for the movie. The set design is what set Big Fish apart. The colors are bright, and everything looks like it comes from a vivid dream. The past looks a tad off kilter and it all contributes to the fairytale-like atmosphere of the film. At the same time, I observed the movie usually uses the color of red to put the character or object as a focal point and toned down everything else. In the scene when Norther and Edward robs the bank, they have jumped into a red car and tries to get away. The red car is the only saturated color in the whole scene. Everything besides it has been toned down and has more earth tone color. Young Sandra also dresses in red when she waited Edward to come back from military. In additional, at the Edward’s funeral, Sandra also wears a red coat when everyone else wears black, which is very unusual and remarkable.

Big Fish is a movie full of special effects. There are animatronics, perspective shots and camera tricks. For example, Karl, who is enormous in the way, looks even bigger by setting him standing a bit closer to the camera and Edward a bit farthe
