Romeo and Juliet’s love eventually leads to their death
Through out the course of English literature, there have been numerous works on love. The word love tends to portray a image of happiness and joy, but in many plays and novels it is the complete opposite. Instead love is often shown in its tragic form, resulting in the death of one or more characters. The best known tragedy of love ever written is the play ‘Romeo and Juliet’. Romeo and Juliet is the perfect example demonstrating the power and passion associated with love. Two star-crossed lovers destined to never be together. Even though Romeo and Juliet are from two rival families, they were determined to express their love despite the consequences that would follow. The forcefulness of their love, their love being a cause of violence and the inevitability of fate results in Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. The dominant and most important theme in the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is love. Specifically, romantic love and Shakespeare builds upon the intense passion that is eminent at the first sigh between Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare tends to depict love as not only a expression of two people’s feelings, but also a violent and overwhelming power; possessing both Romeo and Juliet. Love in the play is a brutal and powerful emotion that captures individuals and pits them against society and themselves. However, in its extreme, the love that Romeo and Juliet experience also appears so beautiful that few would ever achieve, or be able to resist. Thus leading Romeo and Juliet to commit acts of violence and suicide. Two star crosses lovers who push the hands of tae in a continuous but hopeless battle. Fate eventually overwhelms them in a merciless victory. Shakespeare’s portrayal of love is best renowned because of his emphasis on the actual word love; love is too powerful a word to be contained in a single metaphor. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ only portrays the chaos and passion of love, resulting in the play’s tragic ending. This is the reason to the popularity of ‘Romeo and Juliet. Fate is also another theme in ‘Romeo and Juliet’. It is shown right away in the prologue; foreshadowing that Romeo and Juliet’s love is not meant to be and a tragedy will occur. The fate aspect of the play is constant and is made aware not just to the audience but to the characters as well.
