Is fair really fair title IX
Often times an author tries to appeal to the emotions of the reader in an attempt to persuade the reader. This is also known as pathos. Ira Berkow, in his article "The Other Side of Title IX", appeals to the reader emotionally by making him feel the unjust suffering of a baseball team that has been cut from its school athletics program without its control. Using the Providence University's baseball team as an example, Berkow attempts to persuade the reader that the present rules regarding Title IX are having the wrong effect on men's sports. He relates the story of a baseball team that is being contracted because of the strain of Title IX on the athletic department. Using strong emotional language and speaking to those who support the present rules regarding Title IX, Ira Berkow appeals to the reader's empathetic side in an attempt to change the reader's mind about Title IX. In this article, Berkow often employs strong diction to appeal to the reader's emotions. To begin the article, Berkow paints a picture of a beautiful afternoon of baseball. Berkow expresses, "The well occupied metal bleachers sparkled under the noon sun; fans had set up beach chairs behind the screen and spread out blankets on the grass" (Berkow 723)
. Using words and phrases like "sparkled under the noon sun" and "spread out blankets on the grass" Berkow is able to remind the reader of a wonderful day in the park, invoking a sense of family and fun. Berkow continues by tearing this beautiful picture apart, "So why the sadness? Why the Anger? Why the passion?" (723). He explains to the reader that, "It is one of the best seasons in school history, and it will be the last." (723). By setting the scene so that the reader will appreciate the value of a nice afternoon of baseball, Berkow is now able to enhance the anger and letdown the reader feels after reading about the team's disbandment. Because he uses words like "anger," "sadness," and "passion", Berkow urges the reader to feel these same emotions as the crowd at the game. The author quickly reminds the reader of Title IX's part in this misfortune by noting that the cuts were made to comply with the rule. The reader can understand that the baseball team is being contracted, under Title IX, for reasons beyond its control. This feeling of helplessness for the baseball team forces the reader to feel the helplessness themselves.
