Beneficial Animal Research

Research with animals greatly advanced our knowledge in scientific pursuits, especially in biology, medicine and biomedical fields. Animal research have given us knowledge about the natural world and provided cure to many diseases. Yet there are people (for instance, animal libertarians) who oppose any use or killing of animals for research. Some of the great contributions from animal research are discussed in order to present arguments against the above opposing view. However, it is done so with a qualifier that we should only allow animal research that is beneficial to the human and natural worlds.

An aspect in support of animal research is the medical remedies it has provided us with. A diseases that we know refer to as the ‘flu’, was once an extremely deadly virus, influenza. The virus had killed many lives, but now it can be cured by one visit to your GP. The cure for it was penicillin, an antibiotic – The antibiotic was acquired from animal research. There are many other life-saving remedies discovered from animal research, some are vaccines, diabetes research, organ transplants, surgery techniques, anti-venoms and many others. This shows that for a few deaths of animals millions of human lives may have been saved.

Although there is one worthless cause for animal testing and that is the use of animals for testing toxicity of substances, such as cosmetics and shampoo. Public opinion is against this type of testing as it is seen as cruel and unnecessary, and many products are now sold as ‘not tested on animals’. Animal research should only ever be conducted when it is properly beneficial to the greater mankind for a worthy cause.

If animal research is considered cruel, then is it not also cruel to stand by and watch innocents die while problems could have been fixed by killing a few animals. Miniscule animal killings follow to animal research, the majority of which leads to human consumption and animal hunting.

So, provided that it is carefully controlled, I do think animal experiments for medical research are justified, as long as it is really necessary and no other type of research is possible. People should ensure that an end is not put to progress in animal research. Biomedical researchers know that an animal in distress is simply not a good research subject. Researchers are embarked on an effort to alleviate misery, not cause it. And remember, if we want to defeat the killer diseases that still confront us, such as AIDS and Alzh
