Engineering

Engineering is useful all over the world. Engineers use principles of science to design structures, machines, and products of all kinds. They look for better ways to use existing resources and often develop new materials. Engineers have had a direct role in the creation of most of modern technology—the tools, materials, techniques, and power sources that make our lives easier. However, not everyone understands what the word really means. A clear understanding of the word engineering can be attained by an analysis of its formal, historical, and informal definitions.

The word engineering can be understood by its formal definition. First, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word engineering has three different denotations. The first one is, "The action of the verb engineer; the work done by, or the profession of, an engineer." (OED 252) The second definition is, "The art

and science of the engineer's profession." (OED 252) The last denotation is, "contriving, maneuvering." (OED 252) Secondly, the word engineering has one connotation according to the OED. The connotation is "Engineering geology, shop, yard. Also engineering science, engineering regarded as a field of study, esp. that part of it which can be treated according to the laws of mathematics and the physical sciences; use esp. as the name of a department in places of higher education.” (OED 252) In addition, the word engineering comes from the Latin word ingeniare, which means to design or to create. However, it is not the only way to analyze that.

There is a better understanding even beyond the simple meaning of analyzing the formal, historical, and informal definitions of the word engineering. Today, special college training prepares engineers to work in a certain field of engineering.
