Les Miserables

The modern world has become increasingly corrupted and dangerous due to many different reasons. Among them are issues such as the characteristics of different societies and environmental conditions. These contributions to society caused many people to feel that evil and corruption can never be driven away, and that those who are filled with these qualities could never be renewed into a better person, therefore, should be turned away. However, in Victor Hugo’s novel, Les Miserables, Hugo contradicts this belief through the life of one man, Jean Valjean. Valjean demonstrated the belief of Hugo that an immoral and corrupt person can be changed into a life of fulfillment and righteousness through love and compassion and would then help others just as he was helped.

After Valjean has been released from prison, he was portrayed as a disregard for society. He had lived so far as a man who saw no hope and love from anyone and so, gave others the same feeling. Valjean did not even feel any remorse for stealing from the bishop who had fed and gave him lodgings. However, Valjean was stirred when the bishop pardoned him of his crime and prevented him from returning to prison. Through this action, Valjean turned to the repentance of all h

Two people who had felt the most hatred towards Valjean more than anyone were affected by Valjean more than anyone else. Fantine’s whole life had changed after the dismissal of her job at Valjean’s factory and blamed him for her loss, thinking that it was he who had turned her down. As Fantine was about to be thrown into jail by Javert, Valjean had stepped in to save her. “This angel, this deliverer, was the very man whom she abhorred…She felt the fearful darkness of her hatred melt within her…while an indescribably and ineffable warmth of joy, of confidence, and of love welled up in her heart” (198). Just as Valjean had realized that there was still some who would show him kindness, Fantine also realized that there were people who would help those in need. Yet although Fantine had been changed dramatically, Javert acquired the biggest change of heart of everyone. He had lived his life very strictly according to the law. However, when Valjean had saved him, Javert’s beliefs and trust in the law was diminished. Javert felt “respect for a galley slave…He shuddered at it, yet could not shake it off. It was useless to struggle, he was reduced to confess before his own inner tribunal the sublimity of this wretch” (336). Javert could not live his past life of beliefs because of the fact that he had been granted this life through someone who contradicted them. Javert had tried to end Valjean’s comfortable life, but
