MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Key Scripture: Gen 5: 21-27 “When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died”.

I. Charles Bartley, who was once the Chancellor of the University of California, said that there are three categories of people in the World over. “The few who make things happen, the many who watch things happen and the overwhelming majority who have no notion of what is happening”.

On the other hand, somebody explained that there are two ways of getting through your day. The first one is by LIST-MAKING and the second way by HISTORY-MAKING. List makers are so much concerned about checking out something that they have successfully done without much concern about the impact that has been caused by whatever the success. Whilst on the other hand history makers are not just making history but are mak

1. A HEART: Without a heart we cannot make a difference. This kind of a heart is not the one that has ventricles and arteries. It is not the one we are used to that pumps red blood. But it is the heart that pumps compassion, love, empathy and feeling for others. God I looking for people who shall have a big heart to accommodate others and be selfless. It is not giftedness that God is looking for but a heart. A heart that does not seek to make a name but to do service even in the shadows. God is interested in people who will be available, faithful and teachable (FAT). The life of Dorcas is really amazing. She was living in the shadows of life; she was a simple obedient woman. She was not known in Israel but within her perimeters, she made a difference. Her ministry was amongst the poor and destitute widows. She used to sow clothes for them. She did this faithfully and with such commitment that after she died; a crowd of widows came out carrying the clothes that Dorcas had sown, complaining that she died prematurely, yet she was still useful in life. They cried bitterly requesting that she be raised from the dead. Seeing their lament Peter prayed and trusted God for her resurrection to life and she came back to life. They were able to continue to live with her again because she was very useful. The question is; what can people say when we die? What one statement can be written about us as our epitaph? If we die and we are raised again, can people who knew us comfortably live with us?

Jonah is a great example of a person who knows that he has a mission but not ready, for personal reasons to stand up to obey God and make that difference. He rather chose to run away from God’s cause and took a different direction. However, God being so kind and merciful, He made ways of bringing Jonah back to track. The ship is an example of a world that has challenges, going through a rough tide. Jonah knew the solution but chose to sleep. He had to be reminded but pagans to wake up and call on the name of His God: maybe He will listen and have mercy on them. The world today is drastically looking for solutions to life’s issues; instead, many atimes, like Jonah, we have tended to adopt a cultural Christianity* that floats with world ideologies.

The striking difference between Enoch and Methuselah is that Enoch lived nearly a third of the time that Methuselah lived. However though Methuselah lived the longest time in the bible, nothing else is mentioned about him. He
