Old Man and The Sea Essay

It is not winning or losing that matters, it is how one plays. In the novel The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the main character Santiago goes through many hardships while trying to catch a great fish, and then while the sharks are trying to devour his precious fish, but in the end he is victorious, as all man is, for he never gave up.

Santiago goes through many hardships while trying the catch the great fish. When Santiago hooks the giant fish, Santiago holds on and decides he never will let go until the great fish is dead. He goes through many discomforts, from his right hand being cut very badly, his left hand cramping, to his shoulders burning with pain. But through all of this he manages to stay with the fish for three long days until the giant fish finally surrenders and he at last wins the ultimate battle. This proves that Santiago when through many hardships while trying to catch the great fish. This shows that Santiago would never give up on trying catching the great fish; he even underwent incredible pain in order to catch his great prize. But, in the end he is victorious and in able to catch his precious fish.

Even though Santiago goes through many struggles, in the end he is victorious. Man endures many hardships in order to achieve something, whether it is catching a fish, or running a marathon, these difficulties may destroy man physically. But mankind will fight, to survive, no matter how big or how small the battle, man will prevail. Santiago once said, “Man can be destroyed, but not defeated.” Santiago himself went through many difficulties, like the great fight to catch the precious fish, and then the great fight against the sharks that wanted to eat his beloved fish. But he never gives up, on catching the fish, and never gives up on fighting the sharks off one by one. Santiago may not have made it home with the fish but he did catch the great fish and put up a remarkable fight against the sharks, which wanted to devour his beautiful fish, using everything in his power. Santiago lost the battle, but he did win the war. He may not have won the battle, because in the end his great fish was completely eaten. But he won the war, because he fought off, and killed many sharks and also put up a great fight in capturing the great fish. Despite all the difficulties, the old man never gave up.
