Deconstructing Some Horrible Hollywood Boys

Deconstructing Some Horrible Hollywood Boys

In Jerry Bruckheimer’s new blockbuster “Bad Boys II,” Will Smith and Martin Lawrence play two cops on the T.N.T. (Tactical Narcotics Team) of the Miami Police Department. The trailer jumps into a debriefing by Henry Rollins (frontman the 1980’s punk band Black Flag), who informs the T.N.T. of their upcoming drug bust of an ecstasy operation Ku Klux Klan. Only in a typical high-action Hollywood film could a high-ranking police officer be played by a tattoo-covered punk rocker. This high action Hollywood film has not only amazing explosions and heavy gunfights but also many negative representations of both Blacks and Caucasians. Although the trailer most likely appeals to the majority of movie-goers in America, “Bad Boys II” would definitely be rejected by Porterites for many reasons of stereotypes, images, and other common traits of Hollywood films.

This goes along with the common portrayal of Blacks in Hollywood as being “players or ballers.” In response to Martin Lawrence’s quote earlier in the paper, Will Smith states, “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” One would associate such a statement with a rapper, not a policeman. Will Smith, who drives a Ferrari and wears fine Italian suits, an expensive watch, and a diamond earring, looks as though he is anything but a cop. As the duo spoils a drug deal in the Everglades, Martin Lawrence throws his KKK robe over his head dramatically and exclaims, “Oopsie daisy, it’s the Nigras.” Secondly, using a word that Caucasian slave owners used to call Black females, in addition to having a Black man wear a KKK robe, could evoke negative feelings for Black people. The fact that the drug dealers are portrayed by KKK members could rise strong emotions from Caucasians dwelling in the South. Due to the sensitivity regarding Slavery in the South, the choice of using KKK members as drug dealers could be stereotyping all Caucasians from
