Philosophy Essay

In this world, it is very hard as a group to agree exactly on what is morally right or wrong. As a society over the years we have all tried our best to present a standard and have based it on some form of general knowledge. But not all societies in this world agree with each others, as I will discuss, why? Mill is one person who gives his outlook on Utilitarianism and I will contrast it with Ross’s outlook on it as well.

Each society in this world is different for several reasons and you can’t find societies with the exact same moral beliefs. The factors that a society says is morally right range from cultures, religions, rituals, government, and so on. For example, suicide bombing to most societies is morally wrong, but some middle-eastern societies believe it is morally right. Some Muslims call it a Jihad which is killing an infidel against their Koran and it makes a suicide bombing morally right for their society, while other societies believe it is murder, thus being morally right in some middle-eastern countries, regardless of individuals for or against it in a society. Those standards are all formed through some form of general knowledge. They have used their religious scriptures such as “The Koran,” justice group

John Stuart Mill’s outlook on Utilitarianism is right because to me if felt more human and not textbook like Ross’s. The three areas I focused on were pleasures, consciences, and moral standards. I agree and believe that these three areas are the foundation of the way humans create moral standards in life as well as societies all over this world. Pleasures, give a different type of satisfaction and it isn’t always a morally standard decision. It can range from murder, adultery, or stealing, which may satisfy one person, but typically they are morally wrong in our society. Consciences, can be altered with by reasoning and lying, therefore again creating different moral standards. Finally, moral standards are shaped by all humans through our own morals, ethics, pleasures, and conscience.

The conscience is defined as the consciousness of the moral right and wrong of one’s own acts or motives. Mill’s carried on this subject about conscience, “But is utility the only creed which is able to furnish us with excuses for evil-doing and means of cheating our own conscience?” (Utilitarianism. Pg.25). That gives insight on how Hitler executed his plan of killing millions and with no remorse, perhaps using utility as though it was necessary to kill the Jews for Germany’s well-being and thus lying to his morals and conscience.

Mill’s seemed to express his thoughts about how it worked through pleasures, consciences, and moral standards. But Sir David Ross differed from Mill
