Kate Chopin's Life

Kate Chopin who was born Catherine O'Flaherty on July 12, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was one of three children born to immigrant Irishman Thomas O'Flaherty and a French-American mother Eliza Faris. In 1855, Thomas O'Flaherty died when Kate was five years old. The lack of male role model in Kates life would greatly influenced her later on in life as a writer. The majority of the stories she wrote were about feminist issues and struggles that women were going through in the 1800's. A novel like the Awakening is one of Kate Chopin's most successful and Well-known stories she wrote. Kate Chopin short story "The Story of an hour" was one of her more personal short stories and wanted readers to know how women felt in the 1800's.

When Mrs. Mallard realizes that she would not mind living her life without her husband, it was like a spirit hit her. I compared her reaction to the reaction of a person on a roller coaster or two cars that almost crashed in to each other. A roller coaster ride is very exciting and a car accident could be very dangerous and sad but both triggers the human body in the same way. Overall I think Kate Chopin is a great writer and is very much influence by her life experiences, women movements in the 1800s’ and classic writer Mauupassant. To me her short story “ Story of an Hour “ is very similar to her life and is the main reason what made that short story a beautiful piece of work and also very inspirational to the women during that time.

During this time period there were changing social conditions for women. They wanted more equality and this led to the women suffrage movement in the early 1800’s. Women started to receive more education and to take part in the reform movements, which involved them in politics. In 1869 suffragist formed two national organizations, one was National Women Suffrage Association and the other was the American Women Suffrage Association. In 1890 the two organizations united and it’s main goal was woman’s right to vote. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour “ was published 1894, around the same time the women suffrage movement was big. I think it had a significant influence on her writing and her character Mrs. Mallard from “ story of an Hour .” The women suffrage association was looking for individual freedoms, as Mrs. Mallard was over joyful when she realized her individual freedoms when she thought her husband died.

The time that Kate Chopin wrote this short story had great influenced and is half of the main reason why she wrote " The Story of an Hour .” If you understood what was going on in the 1800's and the role of women in the 1800s' you would understand the experiences and feeling of
