Who Is God And What Does He Do?

Psychology is an experimental science that has been progressing smoothly for about two hundred years. But even before that, philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle were wondering how the gods had affects on the people. All people have thoughts about higher beings, such as God. God is a religious figure that Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Orthodox people learn to respect and worship. But has anyone ever questioned on how we became to understand this concept of God?

God is considered to be the most powerful being that “is always and always will be.” But some psychologists see this as a very different way than the religious people do. According to the psychologists in this article, God is something that we create in our heads, which can be unlearned if taught a certain way when we were younger. This argument was going on over a century ago with William James, who said that this topic should receive “Scant empirical attention.”

When I graduate, attain my degree in psychology, and also try to get my M.D., I would like to take a stand as these respectable psychologists have done and try to explain my point of view openly. After I have my job, if religion is the topic, then there is going to be a good conversation between patient and doctor. I will not treat people unfairly if their religious view is different than mine; I would actually love to hear their view and would want to build a better relationship through that difference.

Through this essay my few main goals were to let the reader understand how other psychologists have handled religion in their line of work and to help make clear how I feel on the subject and what possible routes I might take when I get my degree. Without religion, I believe that people can be lost and would not have a reason to keep on living if in a bad predicament. I hope that I get this degree so I can counsel people on this view and be able to learn a lot from the patients that I may deal with in the future.
