Genetics

Imagine what life would be like if we could eliminate human problems. The question shakes us all to our very core. Genetics is slowly paving the road to this utopian vision. Genetics gives us the ability to manipulate DNA, Clone human beings, in short it gives us the power to be Gods. Although the road to this power has many bumps in it and the steps we must take and the morality of the whole idea are controversial; should we experiment on humans, are embryos people and where do you draw the line, when does it change from giving birth to a child to manufacturing a child.

Probably one of the most debated topics in the scientific world today is cloning. Cloning is when you make an exact genetic copy of someone of something. Since 1997 when the first Sheep was cloned using adult cells people have been debating whether or not we should move forward with cloning. But there are many good reasons to why we should continue with mastering cloning. First of all you have to look at all the problems it would solve, for example last year only 6% of the people waiting for organs got them which means that 94% went without. Well through the process of cloning we could easily create all the organs that we needed which could save many lives. Al

We now arrive at another part of Genetics, one that is filled with fear and controversy because it is plagued with science-fiction nightmares and a lack of understanding, Genetic Engineering. Genetic Engineering is manipulating or changing someone’s or something’s DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) to cause a physical change. This would allow families to “customize” their children at will, choosing things like their hair color, eye color, even things like allergies or inherited diseases. This leaves open a world of possibilities, for example they say that diabetes is genetic which means that you can get it passed down from your parent; but through the miracles of Genetic Engineering that would no longer be a problem. But many people argue that there is no love involved when you have the perfect child. But that statement is an oxymoron for anyone who believes in true love. Because what could you possibly love more than a child who in your eyes is perfect, how is having a child that is perfect any different than finding your perfect match, your “soul mate”. But of course people are filled with the thought that this could be used for evil, used to make the perfect soldier and then with the help of cloning an army of perfect soldiers used to conquer the world. Now just think about how ridiculous that sounds, yes it could be used for those purposes but babies still have to grow up and you still need surrogate mothers so this is no more than another science-fiction nightmare. Genetic Engineering could help abolish some of the worlds most severe problems. Things like Cancer and AIDS could all be abolished. You see through further research we could make the next generation of humans immune to cancer, immune to AIDS even immune to things as simple as the common cold. This would undoubtedly be an age of prosperity but there is more to it than just curing diseases.

We then lead to the many doubts and concerns that people have when they think about cloning. They were about issues like recreating Hitler, unfair burden of automatic expectations and it being used for malicious purposes. First of all recreating a person is impossible, you cannot control a persons personality just because you have the same genetic code, or else there would be no difference between identical twins. Next children will always be burdened with their parent’s aspirations and just like always parents will have to realize that children clones or not are independent with the right to chose their identity. And to put to rest the final concern I have pointed out , you have to except that no matter what developments are made in scie
