With the invention of the cellular phone service in 1983, personal telephones no longer depended on wires. In the 90's it was now possible to connect to the Internet from virtually anywhere in the world from your cellular phone using satellite services. Some countries depend on cellular phones as their main source of communication, such as China. For the people in China, it is too expensive to own a house phone; therefore nearly everyone carries a cellular phone. In the U.S., only about 68 percent of the U.S. population (which is more than half) uses mobile phones. Cellular phones are becoming not only a way of communication, but also a fashion statement for teenagers. A little more than 60 percent of Iceland, Norway, and Sweden's populations own cellular phones. 40 to 50 percent of Europe and Japan's population also own cellular phones. Cellphones use technology to exploit the social network of kids, Entertainment and fashion and friends are the cornerstones of how cellphone companies are marketing to youths. Keeping up with American youths is what's hip. Virgin Mobile tracks about 10 groups of urban and suburban teenagers nationwide, surveying them monthly to gauge their tastes. It also runs ads during music and late-night comedy programs or other times when teenagers are likely to be watching television without their parents. Virgin Mobile also monitors sites aimed at youths, such as Bolt.com, on which it identifies popular teens by studying how many people respond to their messages or forward their comments to other participants. Virgin then asks these teens what they think of certain phone models, features and advertisements. For some parents, safety has been a strong selling point. Most parents get their kids cell phones because they feel like it’s the best way to keep up with them. Nonetheless, Since teenagers are always on the go, it’s become the most effective tool for communications between parents and children. However, cellphones are not always safe to use. Some states recognized that more car accidents have occurred due to the use of cellphones while driving. Otherwise most states are coming up with laws that prohibit the use of cell phones in cars. There are laws now that say you cannot use your cell phone while the car ignition is on. There is a bill pending that will limit cell phone use. If this bill passes, it will be illegal for cell phone users to use their phone in the car. In Hawaii, the bill H.R. 284 introduced in 1995, that states that the increasing use by motorist of cell phones together with laptop computers and similar devices are danger to safe driving in the states and may constitute a contributing factor in states traffic accident. (www.nhtsa.dot.gov.) Cell phones could be a huge distraction while driving. A magazine published a reader survey that found that 59% of adults believe that driving is more risky now than before. When most victims of car accidents were asked how the accidents happened, 18% reported that they were talking on the phone.
