John Hammond – Good Man or Not
Jurassic Park was an intriguing science fiction novel, in which Michael Crichton made the story come alive. This book was about one man, whose greed for power and money created a world of terrifying creatures, which in the end destroyed itself. In this book review, I will share my thoughts of Jurassic Park through a plot summary, followed by a brief discussion of the books’ theme. Crichtons’ novel begins with a series of small, but influential events, which captivate the readers and introduces them to an entirely new genre. These proceedings are all related in some way or another, being that they all have something to do with peculiar looking, but apparently dangerous “lizards”. After these events come to pass, the real story begins. There are many characters in this book, but a selected few stand out from the vast number of individuals: John Hammond, Ian Malcolm, Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Donald Gennaro. When all of the action is over, only 6 people make it off the island alive. Out of these people only two of them (Hammonds’ grandchildren) get to return to their homes in the United States. The remaining four are placed under house arrest in Costa Rica. Grant and Sattler are invited by InGen (bio-engineering company) to accompany a mathematician from Texas (Ian Malcolm) and one of their own employees (Donald Gennaro), to assess the safety of a new theme park in Costa Rica. Grant and Sattler agree to the invite. While the group is enjoying the spectacle of the beautiful and deadly creatures, the parks’ computer technician (Denis Nedry) is waiting for just the right moment to turn off the power (this includes the electrified fences that hold the dinosaurs), and go into the Jurassic Park lab.
