Why Marijuana should be legal

According to American public-opinion polls, marijuana is not supported in any way shape or form by the American people. Since approximately 1992, the huge debate whether to legalize marijuana or not has been a giant issue in America. Marijuana is both good and bad, and the decision that America makes on the legalization of marijuana will have a critical impact on society. (Exposing 1) Marijuana should be legal for medical usage, and for adults over the age of 21 who moderately use the drug with caution.

Marijuana not only causes lung cancer, and other various problems, it also supports gangs, gang violence, and other bad problems with America. Regular use of marijuana can lead to psychological habituation for some people making it difficult for them to quit. Studies have estimated that between 5 and 10% of those who try smoking cannabis will become daily users sometime during their life, but most of these smokers will have given up the habit by age 30 and few remain daily smokers after age 40. (Souder 153) Most people do not experience signs of physical addiction, but with regular daily use, mild to medium withdrawal symptoms usually occur for less than a week, but can extend for as long as 6 weeks. (Krauthammer 158) The m

Knowing all of the goods and evils of marijuana, it does not seem as bad as alcohol or cigarettes, which are both legal, so why not legalize marijuana? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), has been officially opposing marijuana prohibition since 1969. In the past 10 years, 10 million people have been arrested for marijuana offenses in the U.S., the vast majority of them for simple possession and use. In 1996, there were 641,600 marijuana arrests in this country, 85% of them for possession; more than in any previous year. The American public seems more receptive to marijuana law reform today then it has in many years. A strong majority has supported the legal availability of medical marijuana at least since 1995. The legalization of marijuana to the public, would not only make millions of people happy, and have less stress, but also reduce the gang violence rates dramatically. Hence the fact that 87% of gang funds for weapons, cars, and other drugs is from the sale of marijuana, the legalization would reduce their funds greatly. Thus resulting in less gang violence and gang trouble in the streets. We would also see fewer suicides, less fatalities from stress, and less pressure on people who do marijuana. The fact is many successes have come from those states which legalized marijuana. The flat out legalization of marijuana may be risky, but the legalization of medical marijuana is a must. (Glasser 136)

ost common negative health impacts of regular cannabis smoking are lung and throat problems including: coughing, increased frequency of throat and lung infections, and reduced lung capacity. There are concerns about possible long term carcinogenic (cancer causing) effects of cannabis smoking, but the results are still somewhat controversial. (Nadelmann 2) It can be safely said, however, that health risks increase with frequency and duration of smoking anything. There are no confirmed, published deaths from cannabis-only poisoning. (County 1) There
