Knowing all of the goods and evils of marijuana, it does not seem as bad as alcohol or cigarettes, which are both legal, so why not legalize marijuana? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), has been officially opposing marijuana prohibition since 1969. In the past 10 years, 10 million people have been arrested for marijuana offenses in the U.S., the vast majority of them for simple possession and use. In 1996, there were 641,600 marijuana arrests in this country, 85% of them for possession; more than in any previous year. The American public seems more receptive to marijuana law reform today then it has in many years. A strong majority has supported the legal availability of medical marijuana at least since 1995. The legalization of marijuana to the public, would not only make millions of people happy, and have less stress, but also reduce the gang violence rates dramatically. Hence the fact that 87% of gang funds for weapons, cars, and other drugs is from the sale of marijuana, the legalization would reduce their funds greatly. Thus resulting in less gang violence and gang trouble in the streets. We would also see fewer suicides, less fatalities from stress, and less pressure on people who do marijuana.
