Suicide note
The poetic form has always been used to express the emotions of life. A poem can be uplifting or full of pain. There are many ways to differentiate between poems such as voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, and symbolism. Just as with other kinds of literature, a poet makes their mark by incorporating all of these elements into their poetry. Many poets get their inspiration from their own lives so the poems become much more personal. In the poem, “Do not go gentle into that good night”, the poet Dylan Thomas urges his father against the arrival of death. This poem is very popular because the poet’s emotions seem so tangible and people can definitely relate the paternal relationship. Another poem that shares a similar theme as Thomas’s poem is Janice Mirikitani’s, “Suicide Note.” This poem approaches the subject of death and family from another angle. Instead of fighting against death, this young girl welcomes it and writes a note as an apology to her parents. Although these poems on the surface seem very different, they both demonstrate a strong use of poetic devices and make a statement about the relationship between death and family. “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at
“Dylan Thomas’s father had been a robust, militant man most of his life, Just as in literature, poetry is often subtle in the way a message or theme is expressed. It takes a deeper look under the surface of the poem. Through the use of symbolism, a poem becomes more then just a simple rhyme or rhythm. In Dylan’s poem, the symbolism is very obvious with the “good night”, and “dying of the light” being symbols of the arrival of death. In “Suicide Note”, there is more than one symbol. One symbol that is ongoing is the comparison of the girl to a fragile bird. This symbol of the bird seems to represent the weak women and the man is the steady pine. Like a bird she is on the ledge willing to make her flight but she knows that the air cannot hold her and her wings will fail. Her body disappears and can be hidden like a small skeleton and the only traces of her memory that remain is her note like a feather or footprint in the snow. Another symbol that is used are these glaciers and weight that represent her failures to herself and her parents. disturbed seeing his father become ‘soft’ or ‘gentle.’ In the poem Imagery is what often makes one poem stand out from another. This all depends on the author’s usage of word choice. Imagery is the phenomenon that occurs when a writer uses words to create a mental image. To do this, many poets use figures of speech and metaphors to make their poem come to life. The repeated use of metaphors and similes can be found throughout the poem, such as: “fragile as wings, my tears drop like bitter cloth, Notes shredded drift like snow, scatter my feather like unspoken song, and so on. Dylan’s poem also uses metaphors and other literary devices to create imagery. “Good night”, and “Dying of the light” are both metaphors for death. Besides metaphors, there are also examples of personification that
